Porter's Rare Heritage Turkeys

About Us

We have two small farms, one in N.E. Indiana with the second in S. C. Michigan. We are family owned and operated, we consider ourselves a breeder, not a hatchery per se. Turkeys is all we do.

Kevin has over 30 years experience raising and breeding turkeys which led him to specializing in the feather color genetics of these rare birds.

Our turkeys live very humane lives at our farms, during breeding season our groups are all separated for breeding but get to also have outside runs from the barns in each group to enjoy natural things like sun and greens. During the non-breeding season our groups are all broke up and they get to go back out onto pasture to enjoy a very natural environment so they get a big reward after producing for us all season.

We first began raising turkeys back in 1990 for their feathers to use on our Native American style crafts. Kevin is part Mohawk and participated in Native American powwows selling his hand-made crafts. We also began selling the feathers from our birds at these events as well as online to other craft people. Native American type crafters as well as fly tyers alike wanted our feathers. We now have a worldwide market for our rare turkey feathers.

First one thing led to another and we began selling poults as well to those that wanted to get started in more of these extremely rare varieties. Most hatcheries carry only a few varieties of the rare and or heritage turkeys. Our goal was to be able to be a one stop source for the really rare varieties which are nearly impossible to find anywhere else. We carried all the more common ones as well. Over the years we developed some new varieties ourselves which are very unique, some of these breed true while others have such a diverse genetic background that they will always produce many different color patterns.

Today we no longer raise quite as many different varieties as we used to but still have a decent selection of rare varieties.
